There can be many reasons why your iPod nano may become unusable. For example, you could be listening to your songs or syncing with iTunes when it suddenly decides to crash. If your iPod appears to be frozen, then it may just need a reset (for syncing problems, read our iPod Sync Troubleshooting Guide).
The firmware inside your iPod (responsible for its operation) can at times trip up — making the unit either freeze while it's on or not power up. It is therefore worth trying to reboot your iPod nano without risking the loss of your music.
You never know, this could be all that is needed so you don't have to take it to someone for an unnecessary repair — they may even charge you for this simple task.
Apple discontinued the iPod Nano on July 27, 2017.
Restarting an iPod nano (1st to 5th Generations)
The first stage in resetting your iPod nano is to slide the Hold Switch to the hold position and then back to the off position again. The next stage involves pressing the Menu and Select buttons down for approximately 10 seconds, or until you see the Apple logo displayed on the screen. If this doesn't work the first time, then try again. If the above steps don't work, then it could be that your iPod nano requires power to reset. Use a power adapter or your computer's power and follow steps 1 and 2 again.
Steps for Resetting an iPod nano 6th Generation
Resetting a 6th generation iPod nano is simpler than for previous versions. The first step is to hold down the sleep/wake button and the volume down button at the same time. This should be done for about 10 seconds, or until the screen goes black. After this, you should see the unit re-boot as usual. If you can't get your nano going then consider plugging it into some power (via USB or power adapter) and then trying again.
Steps for Restarting a 7th Generation iPod nano
The process of resetting the 7th generation iPod nano is very similar to the 6th gen. However, there is one slight difference. Hold down the sleep/wake button and the Home button for up to 10 seconds, or until the Apple logo is displayed. After a short while, your device should now restart and display the home screen.
