JBL Charge 4

As the name implies, the Charge 4 is JBL's latest iteration in its highly acclaimed Charge lineup, and it continues to be worthy of the name, packing in room-filling sound, plenty of bass, and rugged durability at a price that's pretty compelling for everything you get.

For one, the IPX7 waterproof rating means it can handle being submersed in a metre of water for up to 30 minutes. This means you won't need to worry about using it beside the pool, at the beach, or even when out boating, as it's designed to float if it does fall into the drink. Needless to say, rain and splashes won't be an issue either.

It also packs in a generous 7,500mAh battery, so you'll be able to listen to your smooth jams for up to 20 hours on a single charge, with a single full-range driver that pumps out clean and crisp sound that remains distortion-free even at high volumes. As an added bonus, the USB port around back can be used to juice up a smartphone or other USB-powered device, and using JBL Connect+ you can also link up to 100 other JBL speakers—of different models, even—to sync up and play the same songs.

JBL Flip 5: A Rich-Sounding Speaker with a Hefty Price

For an affordable, portable, and waterproof Bluetooth speaker that makes no compromises on sound quality, the JBL Flip 5 is an obvious choice. It's a speaker that punches above its weight class in delivering the perfect balance of treble, midrange, and bass across a fairly wide range of genres.

In fact, just like its predecessors, JBL's Flip 5 will make you question how such great sound can come from such a small package. The unique 44mm driver design delivers 20 watts of sound that's both textured and nuanced, rather than simply belted out. It offers an impressively spacious soundstage for its size, with a surprising bass presence that supports the trebles and mids, rather than overwhelming them.

It's also both durable and portable enough to take on all of your outdoor adventures, whether that's just a block party down the street or a five-day hike into the wilderness, and the IPX7 waterproof rating means that it's ready to handle everything from pool parties to white water rafting. JBL's PartyBoost feature will let you link it up with another compatible JBL speaker to get better stereo separation. The internal 4,800mAh battery promises up to 12 hours of listening time on a full charge, and as an added bonus it sports a USB-C port for faster charging, so you can top it up from almost nothing in less than three hours.

Best Budget:Tribit XSound Go Portable Bluetooth Speaker

What We Don't Like

Weak on bass

It's hard to find a really affordable Bluetooth speaker that sounds much better than a tin-can, but Tribit's XSound Go may very well be the exception that proves the rule. Packing clear, crisp, and loud sound into a sub-$50 speaker is no small feat, but somehow Tribit has managed to pull it off.

To be clear, you're getting what you're paying for here, so don't expect it to rival $100+ speakers, but the XSound Go delivers audio quality that's unrivalled by any other speaker in its class. There's even some reasonable bass presence here, which is really uncommon to find at this price point, although it still distorts a bit at higher volume levels, so we definitely wouldn't call this a party speaker.

The XSound Go does make a good all-around pick, however, with an IPX7 waterproof rating that means it can take a dunk in up to a metre of water for half-an-hour and keep on going. It's also solidly built and charges over USB-C, promising up to 24 hours on a single charge. A built-in mic offers both speakerphone and voice assistant capabilities, and there's even a 3.5mm auxiliary input, so you can use it as a wired speaker too.

Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2

Ultimate Ears has made a name for itself in the world of portable Bluetooth speakers with an iconic design language matched with awesome sound quality, and the Wonderboom 2 continues the worthy lineup by packing great sound into an even smaller package.

The sturdy and rugged design also means you could toss it around like a softball without fear of damaging it—assuming you wanted to do such a thing. Personally, we'd prefer to just listen to its great sound quality. It's also waterproof of course, but UE has taken this one step further, going for an IP67 rating, which means that it's certified as being dust- and sand-proof as well. Although this tends to be true of many other speakers, in this case the IP67 rating means you can count on it. It also packs a surprisingly hefty battery into its small frame, promising up to 13 hours of audio playback on a single charge. Plus, it's available in UE's usual array of fun colours.

It's pretty remarkable what UE has packed into this little softball-sized speaker. It's small enough to take with you pretty much a nowhere, and yet it manages to include the same big bass sound signature that's a hallmark of the company's larger Boom speakers, making it totally deserving of the Wonderboom name. While the bass is more than you would expect from a four-inch speaker, it's not overpowering, and plays nicely with genres from metal to classical.

"Between an excellent 13-hour battery life, waterproof and drop-proof design, and enough volume to cut through even the loudest background noise, the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 is the perfect speaker for a backyard party or day at the beach."— James Huenink, Product Tester

Best Value:Anker Soundcore Flare+

What We Don't Like

Bass boost is needlessly heavy

Some distortion at higher volumes

Anker has a reputation for making solid products at an affordable price, and its Soundcore Flare+ is no exception. It's an affordable waterproof Bluetooth speaker that combines some fo the best tricks from a variety of other brands into a package that works quite well for its price tag.

The cloth texture is reminiscent of UE's Boom series speakers, while at the bottom you'll find an LED light ring that mirrors JBL's well-known Pulse lineup. The sound is delivered by two full-range drivers and two tweeters backed up by a pair of passive bass radiators. The result is strong sound across the entire dynamic range, and it's loud enough to take to an outdoor beach party without fear that it will be drowned out by the surrounding noise, although it distorts a bit at higher volumes. There's also a bass boost feature for those who want to pump things up a bit on the low-end, and can make the bass feel excessive with certain genres. Fortunately, that's an optional setting, and it generally delivers more than enough bass without it anyway.

It also has the usual IPX7 rating that's common among most waterproof speakers, so poolside and beachfront use will be non-issues, and two of them can work as a pair for proper stereo playback. The LED light ring on the bottom can pulse and phase to the beat of your tunes, and it even includes a microphone for taking calls or calling up your smartphone's voice assistant. Best of all, it offers up to 20 hours of listening time on a single charge.

iFox iFO12 Bluetooth Shower Speaker

Even though any waterproof Bluetooth speaker can get the job done, when it comes to listening to your favourite tunes during your morning ablutions, the iFox iF012 is a special breed that makes the whole process far more fun and enjoyable.

For one thing, it has a suction cup design that's made to attach to the tiles in your shower, so you won't have to worry about trying to awkwardly prop it up on a shower rack or soap dish. All of its control buttons are also front-and-centre and easily accessible—something that's important when you're shaving or wiping shampoo out of your eyes. There's even a handsfree speakerphone built-in, along with a control button, so you can take calls without having to reach for your phone.

Although the audio quality here isn't going to rival some of the higher-end beach speakers, it's still remarkably crisp and clear. It does well for its affordable price, and is more than adequate for listening in the confines of a bathroom. The suction mount is also remarkably strong—once you attach it to a surface like your shower tiles or window, it's not going anywhere. Our testing showed that it also packs in an impressive 18-hour battery life during normal use, which is especially surprising for its small size, although it likely benefits from the fact that it's not an outdoor party speaker, so you'll typically be listening to it at lower volumes.

Best Compact:Bose SoundLink Micro

Built-in speakerphone functionality

Impressive bass in a small package

What We Don't Like

A tad expensive

Poor battery life

Bose SoundLink Micro is proof that good things really can come in small packages. This little Bluetooth speaker is tiny enough to fit in the palm of your hand, but it puts out loud and impressive sound for its size, thanks to a custom-designed driver for the mids and highs that's accompanied by two passive radiators.

What's especially remarkable about the SoundLink Micro, however, is just how much bass it puts out for its size. Going this small almost always means compromising on sound, but while we're not going to lie—you're still going to get better results from a larger speaker—this thing definitely punches well above its weight class when it comes to bringing the bass. It can also get respectably loud for its size, although you'll get some distortion at higher volumes. After all, Bose can only push the laws of physics so far. Along the same lines, a smaller speaker means a smaller battery, so don't expect more than six hours of listening time on a single charge.

The rubberized silicone exterior and IPX7 waterproof rating make this a speaker you can take pretty much anywhere, and it even has an integrated strap, so you can clip it onto a backpack or even your belt. There's also an integrated mic with speakerphone capability, so you can use it for phone calls or even calling up Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant without taking out your smartphone. It's also a cinch to pair up over Bluetooth, thanks to a series of helpful voice prompts.

Heavier than it looks

Let's face it, while many portable Bluetooth speakers can punch out great sound, they also tend to be pretty boring to look at. While that's fair as speakers should be more about sounds than sights, JBL's Pulse 4 proves that there's really no reason they can't provide the full sensory experience.

As a JBL speaker, the Pulse 4 delivers the great audio that the company is known for, but adds a great twist for livening things up at parties: a pulsating dynamic light shows. Visible from all sides, the Pulse 4 lights up to the beat of the music, with a wide selection of patterns and themes to choose from. In fact, the Pulse 4 takes it a big step further by offering a smartphone app to let you customize your very own light show. You can also keep the lights going, lava-lamp style, when the music is off.

As a rule, party speakers need to deliver a solid amount of bass, and the Pulse 4 doesn't disappoint here either. In fact, we'd say that unlike most party speakers, JBL gets it right by making sure that bass is present without being overpowering. To be clear, though, this is more of an indoor speaker, as the bass drops off and distortion starts to creep in at the higher volumes you'd need for a big beach party, although the IPX7 rating means you're fine to use it near the water. The built-in battery provides up to 12 hours of battery life with the light show enabled, but you can squeeze a bit more listening time out of it by turning off the lights.

The 8 Best Outdoor Stereos for the Beach, Camping & Adventure in 2021

Best Bass:Sony SRS-XB33 Extra Bass Portable Speaker

Buy on AmazonBuy on Best BuyBuy on Walmart

For a waterproof Bluetooth speaker that's all about the bass, Sony's SRS-XB33 is an option that both looks and acts the part. While it's not the smallest Bluetooth speaker you'll find, it's still portable enough to travel with. More importantly, however, delivering top-notch bass requires substantial drivers to handle the lower end, and Sony has made no compromises here.

With an IP67 rating that covers both water and dust protection, it delivers on ruggedness as well, making it a great choice for everything from beach parties to wilderness adventures. The rather substantial oblong design also features two LED light bands on either side that can change colours and ebb and flow to the beat of your music. Plus, there's a built-in mic that can be used to handle calls from your smartphone and even access your favourite voice assistant. It also supports NFC for quick and easy Bluetooth pairing with modern smartphones.

When it comes to the bass performance, the SRS-XB33 packs a wallop, delivering such a powerful thump that you'll swear it's coming from a larger speaker, and it remains this way across most of the volume range. Although the bass thins out a bit on the top end, there's still more than enough low-end depth and best of all, none of the distortion commonly heard from smaller speakers at max volume. A companion smartphone app will let you tweak the EQ to your preferences, as well as control the LED lights. The SRS-XB33 also promises up to 24 hours of playback on a single charge, although of course your mileage will vary depending on your listening volume.

Final Verdict

The JBL Charge 4 is a powerful and versatile speaker that delivers great sound, awesome battery life, and can even be used to charge up your smartphone. If you're looking for something cheap and cheerful, however, Tribit's XSound Go is really hard to beat, with audio quality that's unrivalled by any other budget speaker.

How We Tested

Our expert reviewers and testers evaluate waterproof Bluetooth speakers similarly to how we test most speakers, except with more focus on durability and wireless connectivity. First, we look at the design and portability, what waterproofing rating it has, how much space the speaker takes up, and how easy it is to connect devices through Bluetooth. To test waterproofing, we dunk or immerse the speaker in a bucket and wash it under running water, provided it's rated for that. We might take it to a beach or a pool to see how it holds up and if it can resist sand and drops.

Next, we play a variety of media content, including music, movies, and games, so we can get a good idea of the sound profile, frequency response, and bass. Here's also where we consider any special features like software customization that allows tweaking of frequency response, directional audio, bass enhancements, or extras like RGB lighting. Finally, we compare it to competitors in a similar price range to make a final judgment. All of the computer speakers we test are purchased by Ach5; none are provided by the manufacturer.

Can waterproof speakers be used underwater?

Waterproof Bluetooth speakers are designed to survive getting wet, which means they'll keep on working after they've been dropped in a pool or lake. That doesn't mean you'll actually be able to listen to them while swimming, however. For that, you're much better off with a dedicated underwater media player and a set of headphones.

What is an IP rating?

An IP, or “Ingress Protection” rating, is used to indicate how resistant a device is to both dust and water. It's expressed as two numbers, with the first representing a device's protection against solid particles like dust, and the second representing water and other liquids. An “X” is used in place of a number when a device hasn't been tested in that category. So, a speaker with an IP67 rating has been tested to be completely dust-tight, while also withstanding immersion in one metre of water for 30 minutes. An IPX7 rating has the same level of water protection, but has not been tested against dust. Note that this doesn't mean that an IPX7 speaker isn't dust-resistant—merely that it hasn't been tested as such.

What's the range of a waterproof Bluetooth speaker?

Waterproof Bluetooth speakers have the same range as any other Bluetooth speaker—the waterproof rating doesn't diminish the Bluetooth range in any way. While Bluetooth technology offers a theoretical maximum range of over 300 feet, almost all smartphones, digital audio players, and Bluetooth speakers use the lower-power “Class 2” Bluetooth, providing a range of around 30 feet (10 meters). As with any wireless technology, however, this distance can vary depending on several factors, such as interference and battery levels.

What to Look for in a Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker

IP rating - The main factor that distinguishes the models on our list from traditional Bluetooth speakers is their water resistance, so you'll want to pay close attention to the IP ratings of any speaker that will live near (or perhaps in) the water.

Audio quality - Key when picking out any speaker, audio quality is especially important for a waterproof Bluetooth model because of how often they'll be used outside. They'll need to be crisp and clear, and powerful enough to compete with any ambient noise outdoor environments present.

Battery life - Because they'll often be used on the go, or may live outside next to your pool, a capacious battery is really important for these speakers. Something in excess of 12 hours is a good place to start, though some of the best will go all weekend long without quitting.
